Building of former girls’ school of Bessarabian Zemstvo to be restored

The building of the former girls’ secondary school of the Bessarabian Zemstvo  (currently the building of “Gheorghe Asachi” Lyceum) will start to be repaired in June. The National Council of Historical Monuments approved the restoration project. The announcement was made by the director general of the Agency for Monument Inspection and Restauration Ion Stefanita on a social networking site.

Contacted by IPN, Ion Stefanita said that the roof will be the first to be repaired. The works will last for about three months. For these works, the Chisinau City Hall allocated 10 million lei. Also, the perfect envisions that the building’s windows and doors will be repaired and the façade will be restored. The adjoining area will be laid out. Other investments are to be attracted for the purpose.

The building of the former girls’ secondary school of the Bessarabian Zemstvo (institution of local government in the Russian Empire) is an architectural and historical monument of national importance that was introduced in the Register of Historical and Cultural Monuments of Chisinau municipality. The foundation stone of the school was laid on May 24, 1881 and the building was finished on August 3, 1882.
