President Igor Dodon on July 3, 2018 gave a news conference on the occasion of his 18 months of presidency. The main message transmitted to the citizens was that he is the right man in the right place. In this connection, the President assured the citizens that he fulfilled practically all his electoral promises as he made effort to achieve the objectives set in his electoral platform. The subtlety of the message was that the citizens should show discernment and make a difference between the attempts to do something, the good intentions and the concrete results that are absent. For the purpose, the citizens should realize the existing obstacles and the lack of real powers for achieving concrete results.
President Dodon said the Democratic Party (PDM) and its activity as the ruling party aimed at limiting the presidential powers were the main obstacle to putting his good intentions into practice. He gave as an example his over 70 legislative initiatives that were rejected by the parliamentary majority of the PDM; blocking of initiatives and access to the high rostrums of international forums; undermining of the good relations with the Russian Federation that he is trying to develop, etc. Even in such unfavorable conditions, he managed to pay 27 visits abroad and to meet with 17 Presidents and eight Prime Ministers, etc.
The invoking by the journalists of the lack of concrete results in his activity made President Igor Dodon to exclaim – give me powers and you will see results. This episode definitely reminded the citizens of ex-acting President Mihai Ghimpu, who also asked for additional instruments from the people for doing what he promised. This is probably the fate of the Moldovan Presidents – they do not have sufficient powers and instruments. That’s why Igor Dodon puts his hopes in the victory of the Party of Socialists (PSRM) in this yearend’s parliamentary elections. In this connection, the President admitted he could even head the PSRM’s list of candidates for MP so as to secure its victory. The legislation does not ban this. If the PSRM obtains a parliamentary majority, the President will obtain the wanted powers so as to be able to deliver the promises made to the voters. This is the stake!
No matter how optimistic and realistic the forecasts of obtaining a parliamentary majority by the PSRM are, President Dodo anticipates major risks. These risks derive from the defective and noxious relationship of Brussels with the pro-European parties of Moldova. He invoked the spiritual values to exemplify the confrontation between good and evil. In this connection, he asked the journalists if they read the Bible and if they understand why Brussels turns the other cheek also when the Moldovan parties, called pro-European, slap it on one cheek. Remaining in the area of spirituality, President Dodon explained how he spreads these values by charity acts, honey and strawberry festivals, concerts organized by him. The money for such events comes from the sources of the First Lady’s Foundation, while those who are malevolent and see acts of corruption in these activities should know, also from the Bible, that they should not wonder where this money comes from. If it’s written that the left hand should not know what the right hand is doing, why so great interest is expressed in the origin of this money?
Returning to the dangers that can hamper the PSRM from taking over after the parliamentary elections, President Dodon resorted to metaphorical expressions. The problem is not in the recurrence, but in the fact that the metaphor about the “sons of bitches” of Brussels in the Republic of Moldova is stinging and suggestive. He is convinced that Brussels will exert pressure on the ostensible pro-European parties – “sons of bitches”- so that they form a coalition even if there are animosities and antagonisms between them. The Head of State knows what he says about the methods used by Brussels to persuade the apparently antagonistic political parties to act concertedly. It happened so in 2012, before the election of Nicolae Timofti as President. Then, Mister Igor Dodon and Missis Zinaida Grecheanyi visited Brussels and the political crisis caused by the impossibility of electing the Head of State, which lasted for three years (!), was solved surprisingly swiftly, evidently with the vote of the Socialist MPs, including of Igor Dodon, but only after Mister Nicolae Timofti passed the statehood test, being examined by Igor Dodon himself. Or Brussels’ sons of bitches would have disappeared from the political life of the Republic of Moldova long ago, in 2012. It is thus useful to update and make public the full list of sons of bitches and not even additional powers are needed for the purpose.

Remark by IPN experts:
The phrase “son of a bitch”, in its plural form “sons of bitches”, that was used by Mister Igor Dodon to characterize the relations between the Western officials and the Moldovan ones is well-known and widely used. In Russian it has at least two meanings. One meaning is positive, frisky and refers to the successfulness of an effort. It shows the joy expressed by Alexandr Pushkin when he just finished wiring his famous tragedy “Boris Godunov”: “My tragedy is finished; I reread it aloud, alone, and clapped my hands and shouted, 'at a boy, Pushkin,' at a boy, you son of a bitch!”
The second meaning refers to the often defective relations between the partners and the allies. Namely in this meaning, the phrase “son of a bitch” was used in the presidential elections of 2016 by the leader of the Party of Communists of the Republic of Moldova (PCRM) Vladimir Voronin with regard to Igor Dodon, who was promoted in politics by the PCRM and later, in 2011, left the party. Voronin revealed, equally, the origin of the phrase and its applicability to Igor Dodon: “In a team he worked well. He has experience and professional skills… One of the famous presidents of the United States, Roosevelt, in 1956 yet, when being asked what he thought about the dictator from Nicaragua, Somoza, he said: yes, he indeed breaks the norms of democracy for which the U.S. pleads and implements. Yes, he is so bad, he is the “son of a bitch”, but he is our “son of a bitch”. I want to say that no matter how Dodon is, he was brought up in a team. Moreover, I know him as an organized and disciplined member of the team. That’s why those who will bot boycott the elections should take this opinion into account, if it matters to someone”.
