A broad cleanup campaign will be held in the municipality of Chisinau on September 24 as part of the project “Hai, Moldova!”. The organizers aim to collect garbage from public places by the common effort of the whole community and to cultivate the ecological spirit in people, IPN reports.

National coordinator of “Hai Moldova!” Nicolae Pascari has told a news conference that similar cleanup campaigns were conducted in Moldova in 2011 and 2012. Then those events involved about 224,000 volunteers who collected 15,000 tonnes of garbage from over 800 communities. On September 24 this year, the campaign will be carried out in Chisinau and its suburbs, while next spring will be extended and will become nationwide.

Andrei Cosuleanu, executive director of the Romanian NGO “Let's Do It, Romania!”, said the Cleanup Day “Hai, Moldova!” on September 24 will be held simultaneously with a similar event in Romania. Romania provides logistic support and materials for staging the event in Chisinau and for coordinating the team. There will be provided a platform developed in Romania, which works based on an application by which the areas that are to be cleaned will be identified. The volunteers will have access to the application in the middle of August and will indicate the areas that need to be cleaned. The volunteers will also be able to register and to choose the area where they will carry out cleanup activities on September 24.

Minister of Environment Valeriu Munteanu said that “Hai Moldova!” is an event with an impact, which proved its applicability in the past and the desiderata of this initiative that unites the people from both of the states will definitely be achieved. “The goal of this event is not only to gather waste in the Republic of Moldova. The desideratum is much more profound: to carry out ecological activities that are the most important ones in a society. We must channel our efforts so that the people realize the seriousness of the problem, while “Hai Moldova!” is an important step in this direction,” he stated.

The Cleanup Month will include training seminars and creative workshops in schools and universities and screenings of documentaries about waste in 27 settlements of Chisinau municipality. In September, a clothes collection campaign will be staged in eight points of Chisinau municipality. The collected clothes will be reused. The campaign will end with a Cleanup Day on September 24.

“Hai Moldova!” is implemented by the association Mega with the assistance of the Ministry of Environment, the Chisinau City Hall and Kaufland.
