The inhabitants of the villages Gura Bacului and Bacioc on May 9 will be able to cross the bridge over the Nistru that connects the two communities on foot in both directions. Such an agreement was reached in the ordinary meeting of the Joint Control Commission.
Contacted by IPN, Ion Solonenco, co-chairman on behalf of Moldova’s delegation to the Joint Control Commission, said the request was made by the mayor of Gura Bacului, who asked that the locals should be allowed to cross the bridge without units of transport. It is a local tradition observed until 1992, when people from Bacioc, Speia and other neighboring villages came to the Heroes’ Memorial in Gura Bacului to commemorate the soldiers killed in battle in August 1944.
Pedestrian circulation over the bridge will be possible only on May 9.
The bridge between Gura Bacului and Bacioc was blown up during the Nistru armed conflict. Though the bridge was repaired, traffic wasn’t resumed.
