The boy who was diagnosed with rabies after being scratched by a stray dog died last night in hospital. The death of the 11-year-old was confirmed by Dr. Stela Cornilova, deputy director of the Contagious Diseases Hospital for Children.
Some ten days after being exposed to the neurotropic virus, the boy developed symptoms that include headaches, overall fatigue, loss of appetite, excitedness and a 39.3 degrees fever, and was admitted to the Hospital’s intensive care unit on July 12. Four days later, on Tuesday, his condition got a lot worse as he developed specific symptoms like aerophobia (fear of draughts of fresh air), loss of voice and others that made rabies the most likely diagnosis.
In people exposed to the rabies virus, vaccines must be administered promptly to prevent the disease, which becomes incurable and 100% fatal once it sets in.
The case is believed to have happened in Chisinau’s suburban village of Ciorescu, and sanitary authorities are scouring the area to locate potentially infected animals.
