The Border Police achieved visible results following the switchover from a militarized system to a professional one. The authority must continue the reforms, especially because the requirements as regards the quality of border management will increase. Such statements were made in the festivity held to celebrate the 22nd anniversary of the foundation of the Border Police of Moldova, IPN reports.

Border Police head Dorin Purice said the period is now sensitive and difficult for the country and the professionalism of the border police is thus very useful. “The reformation of the institution is not a caprice, but a national priority. Moldova needs powerful authorities capable of ensuring the functioning of society,” he stated.

He also said that the Border Police will continue to make effort to deal with the challenges and threats to the security of Moldova’s borders. “We will strengthen our capacities so as to bring value added to the region. We will support and contribute to shaping the country’s European future. We will continue to be a transparent institution that enjoys the trust of the national and foreign partners and that has responsible, professional and receptive personnel,” said the Border Police head.

Attending the ceremony, Prime Minister Iurie Leanca said the improvements represent a solid foundation for the further activity, especially because the requirements as regards the quality of border management will increase. In this respect, he entrusted several takes for the immediate future to the Border Police.

One of the tasks is to develop the human resources so as to fulfill any mission. The second task is to strengthen crossborder security, which is a major national security objective. “We must have safe borders for the Moldovan people and for the business community,” said Iurie Leancă. He noted that the Border Police must meet the EU standards and must develop its capacity to access foreign funds so as to obtain the necessary financing.

Minister of the Interior Dorin Recean said the Border Police can now protect the borders much better. “Such a result was achieved by gradual work, by the effort of each of us,” he stated.

In 2012, the Border Guard Service was transformed into the Border Police.
