President Maia Sandu is the Moldovan political figure that enjoys the biggest trust. She was named by 20% of the respondents of the Public Opinion Barometer (BOP) for November 2022. The previous President Igor Dodon was mentioned by 9.4% of those interviewed, the leader of the Shor Party Ilan Shor – by 6.3%, mayor of Chisinau Ion Ceban – by 2.8%, the leader of the Party of Communists, ex-President Vladimir Voronin – by 2.1%, ex-Premier Ion Chicu – by 1.8%, etc. The survey was carried out by CBS Research and the Institute of Public Policy (IPP).
In a news conference staged by IPN, IPP executive director Arcadie Barbăroșie said that 40.3% of those surveyed responded that they do not trust anyone, with the question being an open one. 9% said they don’t know, while 1.8% refused to respond. “So, over half of the respondents didn’t know to choose a political figure. I presume these 51% of the respondents are persons who simply don’t know political figures, but I suppose there are many of those who know such, but didn’t want to name them,” said Arcadie Barbăroșie.
The citizens were asked who they would vote if presidential elections were held next Sunday, being offered a list of politicians. 27.3% responded they would vote for Maia Sandu, 15.4% – for Igor Dodon, 9.1% – for Ilan Shor, 7.1% – for Ion Ceban etc. Also, 10.7% said they would not take part in the polls, while 19.8% said they don’t know who they would vote for or didn’t answer.
If parliamentary elections were held next Sunday, 24.6% would vote for the Party of Action and Solidarity, 16.6% - for the Party of Socialists, 10.1% - for the Shor Party. 14.2% of those interviewed would not go to the polls, 21.6% - don’t know, while – 3.6% didn’t respond. “We have over 40% of the respondents who either would not vote or don’t know or didn’t answer this question. The political parties that want to be supported by the citizens should seriously take into consideration those who would not vote or do not know who to vote for,” said Arcadie Barbăroșie.
If a referendum on Moldova’s entry into the EU was held next Sunday, 50.9% of those surveyed would vote for, 30.2% would vote against, 14% said they didn’t know or didn’t decide, 3.9% would not take part, while 1% didn’t respond.
Also, 54.5% would vote against entry into NATO in a referendum, while 22.4% would vote for.
Those polled were also asked how they would vote in a referendum on Moldova’s union with Romania. 47.4% of the respondents said they would vote against, while 35% said they would vote for.
Asked how they would describe the developments in Ukraine, 38.8% of those polled said it is an unjustified invasion by Russia, 17.1% said that Russian defends the Donetsk and Luhansk people’s republics from Ukraine’ attacks, while 15.1% said it is an operation to free Ukraine from Nazism.
Sociologist Vasile Cantarji, of CBS-Research, said the poll is representative at the national level and covered a sample of 1,132 persons, being based on face-to-face interviews. The data were collected during October 29 – November 10. The margin of sampling error is 3%.
