Socialist MP Bogdan Țîrdea said the Republic of Moldova manages to maintain normal relations with the European Union and NATO, but the situation concerning the relations with the Russian Federation is more difficult, IPN reports.

Bogdan Țîrdea said only the meeting of the Prime Ministers of Russia and Moldova and the participation of Prime Minister Ion Chicu in the session of the Eurasian Economic Commission can be considered good results in the Moldovan-Russian relations. However, no progress is made in strengthening the status of the Russian language and in amending the law on the combating of Russian propaganda.

MP of the Action and Solidarity Party Vladimir Bolea said the relations between Moldova and the EU will depend on the way in which the Government fulfills the commitments and the demands of the development partners. The period of statements passed long ago and the relations entered a pragmatic phase. “Currently, what we declare should be supported by deeds. If we speak about the justice sector reform, this reform should ultimately ensure that those who break the law are punished. Any person, from street sweepers to MPs or President, regardless of the post held and the party of which they form part, should be punished if they break the law. This should be the result,” the MP stated in the talk show “Key Issue” on NTV Moldova channel.

Expert in political sciences Igor Volnitski said the balanced foreign policy tactic was adopted in Moldova in 2017-2018, after the Democratic government managed to spoil the relations with the EU, with Russia and also with the U.S. The voters tend to support the politicians who plead for the population’s welfare rather than those who promote geopolitics and the result of the elections in Chisinau municipality, where the representative of a party of the left won mayoralty for the first time, is a relevant example.

The discussion followed President Igor Dodon’s statements at the PACE session, where he said: “I wish Moldova was no longer classified as pro-Russian, pro-European, pro-American, or pro-Romanian. We have citizens who can support all these directions, or none at the same time. It is important not to generate geopolitical stereotypes, but to embrace democratic values”.
