The victory of the pro-European forces is an unprecedented opportunity for the Republic of Moldova to come closer to the European Union, while Romania will be the most important advocate of the Republic of Moldova in Brussels, said the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Romania Bogdan Aurescu, who paid an official visit to Chisinau. According to the official, the energy interconnection projects remain at the top of the Chisinau-Bucharest agenda, IPN reports.

The victory of pro-European, reformist and democratic forces is welcomed by the Government in Bucharest. The minister noted that Romania will offer assistance to the new executive in the fight against corruption and to implement economic recovery projects.

“For Romania, it is strategically important for the Republic of Moldova to be stable, democratic and closer to the European values as these are the values that we share and we are convinced that it is for the direct benefit of the citizens of the Republic of Moldova for what is happening in the country to follow a democratic logic. We consider this political evolution is favorable to the Republic of Moldova. The citizens have big and immediate expectations and the Government should therefore deliver results very swiftly. But the new Government will not be alone. Romania will be near the Republic of Moldova,” Bogdan Aurescu stated in the talk show “Emphasis on Today” on TVR Moldova Chanel.

According to him, the energy interconnection projects launched earlier will be continued and new projects to ensure the country’s economic development will be initiated.

“We intend to continue the strategic interconnection projects in the energy sector, in the transport sector. I refer to the repair of roads over the Prut, the building of new roads and of power interconnections between the two countries. The Isaccea-Vulcăneşti-Chisinau is a key project for us. The completion of works will enable to reach the full capacity of up to 6 million m3 a day for the Iasi-Ungheni-Chisinau gas pipeline,” said Bogdan Aurescu.

He noted the EU is interested in having prosperity and stability in its neighborhood.

“It is also an opportunity for the European Union. The EU tries to act more at global level as a global player. If the EU does not manage to be influent in its own neighborhood, it will definitely not manage to be a real global player. This opportunity, generated by the results of the elections in the Republic of Moldova, should be fructified by the EU by consistent assistance, by support that does not mean abandonment of conditionality, but by assistance in meeting these conditions,“ stated Aurescu.

The visit by the Romanian Minister of Foreign Affairs to Chisinau is the first visit paid by a European official to the Republic of Moldova after the announcing of the results of the snap parliamentary elections of July 11, 2021.
