The best librarians and library activities were awarded at the 13th Gala of National Award Laureates “GALEX” that was staged by the League of Librarians and the National Library. There were conferred 13 awards in the form of trophies and diplomas for achievements in supporting and promoting libraries, books and reading in Moldova, IPN reports.

EU Ambassador to Moldova James Pettit was named the “Best politician who supports libraries”. The diplomat was awarded for the support offered to the National Library within the project to safeguard historical documents. The mayor of Izbite village of Criuleni district Ion Plamadeala received the “Best library founder” award for supporting libraries in the community, for his involvement in the projects implemented at libraries and for volunteering in the works to repair and renovate the institution.

Prose writer and journalist Iulian Ciocan got the “Best writer who promoted the book and reading” award for involvement and contribution to organizing and holding activities to promote books and reading. The “Most generous sponsor of libraries” award went to Alexei Chirdeachin, teacher of the Comrat University, for promoting the image of the National Library and for cultivating love for the books and reading in the young generation.

IPN News Agency received the “Best promoter and supporter of libraries, books and readings in the mass media” award for offering informational support in the activity of the National Library, for promoting and reflecting the image of the library, books and reading in society. “I’m honored to be here today, in this position. I think this is an award that is wanted by any team or even any person from our journalistic guild and not only. In the absence of high-level spiritual centers like those existing in other states, the book and the library as the temple of the Book and the National Library as a temple of times remain the most important place of pilgrimage and worship here, at home,” stated Valeriu Vasilica, director of IPN News Agency.

Scientific researcher of the Institute of Cultural Heritage of the Academy of Sciences of Moldova Alexandru Magola, president of the Scientific Association “Historia”, was named the “Best philanthropic friend of the National Library”, for his contribution to developing the collections of the National Library. Director of the Polish Institute in Bucharest Agnieszka Skieterska was conferred the “Best supporter of the policies and programs to develop cultural heritage” award for the logistic assistance in complementing the collections of the National Library.

Veronica Cosovan, head of the National Library’s Old and Rare Books Section, was named the “Best librarian of 2017” for her professional activity and contribution to implementing innovative services at the section. Galina Agafita director of the Public Library “Grigore Vieru” of Calarasi town was named the “Best public library librarian of 2017” for her contribution to implementing programs and projects to modernize the activity of libraries, for prodigious work in promoting books and readings in the community and for her faithfulness to the profession of librarian.

Ludmila Corghenci, head of the Center of Continuous Professional Formation in Bibliotechonomy and Information Sciences, got the “Best bibliotechonomy project” award for organizing the continuous training of library personnel. The “Best publication in bibliotechonomy” went to Maria Sargun, who compiled the book “Hope and destiny of a chronicler. Nicolae Roibu – prose writer, publicist. Bibliography”. The “Best project to promote the image of the library” award was offered to the Library of the Balti University “Alecu Russo” and the Municipal Library “B.P. Hasdeu”.

Elena Pintilei, director general of the National Library, congratulated the librarians on the occasion of the World Book and Copyright Day and the Librarian’s Day. She said the activity of libraries is an area where a lot of work is done and a high level of professionalism is required.
