About 170 heritage documents that form the collection of Bessarabian charters of the National Library of the Republic of Moldova will be restored within a project that will last until the spring of 2019. The project “Safeguarding Bessarabian Charters of the Tsarist Period (1812-1917)”, which is supported by the U.S. Embassy in Moldova, was launched at the National Library on September 26. The Library also mounted an exhibition of Bessarabian charters, IPN reports.

The project envisions the modernization of the processes of conserving, restoring and exhibiting heritage documents at the Library. The librarians of the National Library will be provided with special devices for cleaning and disinfection and for creating a microclimate, as well as specialized furniture for exhibiting heritage documents. There will also be thought up training programs for librarians, researchers and specialists in document conservation and restoration that will be managed by foreign experts.

The Bessarabian charters represent the primary source of information for researchers. Some of these are the only documents in the Romanian language depicting local and international events of that period.

The project is financed by the U.S. Embassy through the U.S. Ambassadors Fund for Cultural Preservation. In the event, U.S. Ambassador to Moldova James D. Pettit said the Ambassadors Fund for Cultural Preservation promotes a wide range of projects to preserve cultural heritage. “By supporting projects to safeguard sites, collections and traditions, the Ambassadors Fund contributes to returning these to the cultural circuit and to their relevance for the future generations,” stated the ambassador.
