The Vilnius Summit will be a failure for the EU, but a success for Romania and Moldova. “I ask forgiving me for such an approach, but this is the reality,” the President of Romania Traian Basescu said in an interview for Radio Romania Actualitati, IPN reports.
Traian Basescu said the non-signing of the Association Agreement and the Free Trade Agreement between the EU and Ukraine is a European failure. The important result of the Vilnius Summit for Moldova is that Moldova’s tendency to come closer to the EU and to detach itself from the influence of the former Soviet Union will be officially marked for the first time.
“We should be realistic. The Vilnius Summit is not a guarantee for Moldova’s integration into the EU, but is a step. The EU does not consider the initialing of the two agreements with Moldova an invitation to accession. It is only a chance for accession and nobody makes pledges now. It is a European prospect, not a commitment,” said the Romanian head of state.
Traian Basescu underlined that the future relations between Moldova and the EU will have to develop based on the realities existing in Moldova, in the context of the failure in the relations between the EU and Ukraine. “The EU adopted an intransigent position on the situation of Iulia Timoshenko and the adoption of the set of laws required for Timoshenko to be in detention in Germany. But this requirement did nothing but push towards a failure as the Ukrainian Parliament didn’t pass the three laws no matter how much Viktor Yanukovich wanted,” he stated.
According to Traian Basescu, if the visa regime is not liberalized and the two agreements with the EU are not signed and ratified by the 2014 parliamentary elections of Moldova, the situation may change as the Communists can come to power.
