The parties in the current Moldovan parliament “have a fundamental duty” to agree on a government, as holding snap elections will not change anything, thinks the former president of Romania Traian Băsescu.
Speaking as a leader of the Romanian People’s Movement Party at a press conference in Chisinau on Monday, Băsescu stated that parties which fail to produce governments in reasonable amounts of time regardless of the concessions involved “have nothing in common with respecting a country’s interests, with patriotism even”.
“I can not believe that parties have emerged that seem not to care about the fact that the country doesn’t have a government. We keep hearing them utter this nonsense – let’s have snap elections. And what will be the outcome? The same!”, he added. Băsescu noted that monitoring reports from reputable organizations like the OSCE described the February election as free and fair, and thus reflecting the will of the people.
When asked about which parties he would like to see form a coalition, Băsescu avoided a straight answer, saying that PMP will collaborate with any government, “because the People’s Movement Party has always focused on the people of Moldova rather than on parties”. He added, nevertheless, that PMP will support a government that goes ahead with the implementation of the Association Agreement with the EU.
