Romania’s President Traian Basescu, who is in Chisinau on an official visit, answering journalists’ questions said that he does not believe in the possibility of provocations stages by Moscow before the Vilnius Summit. The Romanian official said that Moscow respects itself too much and will not do something like this, IPN reports.

According to the Romanian head of state, the situation in Moldova is different from that in Romania before the accession to the EU. “There was political unanimity in Romania on the road to Europe. We didn’t have internal opposition as the one that has appeared here over the last few months. I don’t think there will be provocations on the part of Moscow. It is the capital of a country that respects itself a lot,” Traian Basescu said in a news conference held jointly with his counterpart Nicolae Timofti.

The Romanian President added that the opposition in Moldova in the last few months has tried to change the country’s course though this course was discussed during his visit to Chisinau, when the presidency of Moldova was held by the leader of the Communist Party Vladimir Voronin. “Now I understand that Voronin forgot that he was born in Dubasari, or that he was not allowed to see his parents’ graves when he was head of state,” stated Basescu.

President Nicolae Timofti said in this connection that there are forces in Moldova that promote other ideas than those of the government. “Provocations are possible, but we will resist by our consistency and by pursuing government policies aimed at the European integration,” he added.
