Former President of Romania Traian Băsescu, currently a MEP, said he warned the leader of the Action and Solidarity Party Maia Sandu, ex-Prime Minister, that Igor Dodon will try to get rid of her. In a meeting he had with the politician in Brussels, he recommended that she should take the first step and should dissolve the alliance formed by the ACUM bloc with the Socialists and should aim at a coalition with the Democratic Party. This way, Sandu would have achieved two important things – two pro-European parties would have been in power and she wouldn’t have conceded all the power to Dodon, IPN reports.

In the talk show “Secrets of power” on Jurnal TV channel, Traian Băsescu said Maia Sandu could have avoided the current situation. Before discussing with Maia Sandu, he had a discussion with the president of the Democratic Party Pavel Filip, who was then willing to form a pro-European alliance, on condition that they were invited to cooperate.

The former President of Romania recommended the two constituent parties of the ACUM bloc to merge and form a solid political organization. “They will probably form one party at a certain moment so that they do not have a two-headed management. This political construct should be secured by a merger,” he stated.

Traian Băsescu also said that ex-Premier Maia Sandu cannot be suspected of being somehow involved in the release of Vlad Filat from jail. It’s hard for him to believe that President Igor Dodon knew nothing about those developments.

According to him, when saying that Maia Sandu contributed to the release of Filat, Igor Dodon aims to shift the blame onto Sandu and this shows how perfidious he is. “Firstly, it’s inadmissible to accuse Maia Sandu of something like this. Secondly, the release on parole is a legal issue and the law is applied equality to everyone, including Filat, and one cannot do justice through the press or by the interests of politicians. I don’t think someone dared to break the law in the case of Filat,” stated Băsescu.
