More than half of the basements of the apartment buildings in Chisinau have been sprayed against pests. Public Amenities Division head Petru Gontea has told IPN that all the basements will be treated against pests, even of the buildings that are not managed by the municipality.

The works started a month ago. Rat poison is put in the basements. The places are also sprayed with chemical substances against mosquitoes. A sum of 700,000 lei was earmarked by the municipality for the purpose. The preparations are bought by tender contests.

After the basements are treated with chemicals, access to them is banned for 8-9 hours. There are over 4,000 apartment buildings in Chisinau. This is the first disinfection this summer. If need be, the procedure will be repeated. Last year, there were performed three rounds of disinfection.

Deputy head of the Green Areas Managing Association Galina Leahu said the enterprise’s employees disinfect first of all the recreational and green areas near lakes and ponds. The green areas in the yards of apartment buildings are sprayed against mosquitoes only when dwellers make such requests. Those who see swarms of mosquitoes, little flies or other pests are asked to inform the enterprise.
