Barack Obama wins second term as President

President Barack Obama has been reelected to a second term, defeating Republican challenger Mitt Romney. America's first black president secured the 270 votes in the electoral college needed to win the race, garnering 303 votes. The U.S. Embassy in Chisinau set up a symbolic polling place for the Moldovans, where President Nicolae Timofti, Speaker Marian Lupu and Prime Minister Vlad Filat and a number of MPs cast their ballots. Barack Obama won most of the Moldovans’ mock votes as well, Info-Prim Neo reports. U.S. Ambassador to Moldova William Moser said that this day is a historical one for the Americans. He noted that the United States has a very interesting electoral system that started to be used 200 years ago and that differs a lot from the Moldovan system. “Mister Obama was officially declared the winner of the elections. Over the next weeks, the President will have to name a new government and to establish the path that the U.S. will follow during the next four years,” stated the diplomat. Moldova’s President Nicolae Timofti said he was glad about Barack Obama’s victory and that the elections ended without incidents. “We hope that our relations will continue to be good. We are a small country and have a lot to learn from the U.S. as regards the democratic norms. When I met with Barack Obama I told him that I supported him in the election campaign,” he said. Vlad Filat said the elections in the U.S. are important for everyone, not only for the Americans. “U.S. Vice President Joe Biden, who is a good friend of Moldova, was also elected. I’m sure that we will see a positive development in our relations in the future,” he stated. Marian Lupu congratulated the American people on the victory of democracy and President Obama on the victory in elections.
