U.S. President Barack Obama and Romanian President Traian Basescu sent congratulatory messages to President Nicolae Timofti on the occasion of the Independence Day of Moldova. The heads of state said they share, alongside the Moldovan people, the emotion and joy of this celebration, IPN reports, quoting a communiqué of the presidential press service.

Barack Obama said that last year was a reference one for the relations between Moldova and the United States. Following the visits by Secretary John Kerry to Chisinau and by Prime Minister Iurie Leanca to Washington, the relations between nations are stronger than ever.

“The United States respects the Moldovan people’s right to freely decide their future and supports the democratic and European aspirations as the best guarantee of security and prosperity in the Republic of Moldova in the future. I’m happy to see that Moldova is taking important steps towards achieving this objective by signing the Association Agreement and obtaining a liberalized visa regime with the European Union. We know that there is yet a lot to be done, but the Unites States is ready to assist Moldova in implementing the reforms needed to built a more democratic and prosperous future,” said the U.S. President.

Barack Obama also said that the United States are firmly committed to help Moldova maintain its sovereignty and territorial integrity and will continue to work in the OSCE 5+2 format so as to reach a peaceful, just and sustainable solution to the Transnistrian conflict.

President Traian Basescu said the Independence Day is a day with special historical significances. “I want to reassert on this occasion that the Republic of Moldova, its European aspirations and the prosperity of its people, with which we have a long common history and, especially, a profound relationship of friendship, will always be my soul project,” he stated.

He noted he is glad that this year’s anniversary is held in a very important period for Moldova and welcomed again the efforts made by the Moldovan authorities that managed to achieve important objectives in the process of coming closer to Europe over the last few months, realizing thus a collective desideratum.

“I assure you that Romania will always be near in everything you will aim to do to ensure a decent, free and prosperous future for all the citizens of Moldova,” reads the message sent by the Romanian head of state to Nicolae Timofti.

On August 27, Moldova celebrates 23 years of the adoption of the Declaration of Independence.
