Banking system’s volume of deposits amounted to about MDL 14.8 bln in January 2008, increasing by MDL 448 mln (3.1%) compared with December 2006, both due to the increase in the volume of deposits in national currency by MDL 186.9 mln (2.6%) and in the volume of deposits in foreign currency by MDL 261.1 mln (3.7%). The volume of sight deposits constituted MDL 5.2 bln, decreasing by MDL 5.9 mln compared with December 2006 because of the diminishing of sight deposits in national currency. The share of sight deposits went down 1.1 percentage points, totalling 35.7% of the total volume of deposits. At the same time, the volume of fixed term deposits increased by MDL 453.9 mln (5%) and amounted to MDL 9.5 bln. The volume of term deposits in MDL constitutes about MDL 242.2 mln (5.8%) compared with the previous month. The volume of term deposits in foreign currency increased by MDL 211.7 mln (4.3%), constituting about MDL 5.1 bln as a result of the increase in the volume of deposits in foreign currency from individuals by MDL 203.7 mln and of the deposits from legal persons by MDL 8 mln, or by 1.4%. The volume of term deposits in MDL attracted in January constituted MDL 657.2 mln, by MDL 56 mln less compared with December 2006. The decrease is due to the diminishing of the volume of deposits from legal persons by MDL 71.6 mln (54.4%), while the volume of deposits from individuals increased by MDL 15.6 mln (2.7%). As a result, the share of term deposits from individuals increased from 81.5% in December 2006 to 90.9% of the total volume of term deposits in MDL attracted during the reported period. In January, the deposits of 3-6 months constituted 60.1% of the total deposits (by 2.5 p.p. less), having however the highest share in the structure of term deposits attracted in national currency. At the same time, the share of term deposits of 6-12 months and those of over 12 months increased by 8.3% and respectively by 2.6 percentage points.
