Bacteria that can endanger health have been found in four lakes of Chisinau, including in Vatra, “Rascani” Park, “Valea Morilor” and “Valea Trandafirilor”. The analyses of water samples taken by the National Public Health Center revealed the presence of the E.coli bacterium, which can cause digestive infections. Furthermore, belly worm eggs were found on the beach sand, IPN reports.

The specialists warn the population that when coming in contact with contaminated water, besides digestive infections, they can also contract skin diseases, viral hepatitis A or meningitis.

“The sand is polluted owing to the large number of stray dogs walking on the beaches of the lakes in Chisinau and because the beaches weren’t renovated, but only plowed,” said Livia Mazur, sanitarian doctor at the National Public Health Center.

In order to prevent infection, the lakes must be cleaned, while the pluvial drainage system must be functional. Protection levees must be built to prevent pluvial water floods.

The lakes in Chisinau now have a decorative purpose. Swimming in them is banned.
