The average lifespan in Moldova in 2019 was 70.9 years, being of 66.8 years for men and 75.1 years for women. It is under the EU-28 average (2018 – 81 years, Eurostat). Life expectancy at birth in 2019 rose by 0.3 years compared with a year before and by 1.6 years on average for both men and woman, IPN reports.

According to the National Bureau of Statistics, the rise in life expectancy during the last few years is primarily due to the reduction in the general death rate and infant mortality. The number of deaths last year decreased by 2.4% on 2018. The death rate was of 13.7 deaths per 1,000 people. Infant mortality also declined: 8.7 children died before turning one per 1,000 live births, as opposed to 9.1 deaths per 1,000 live births in 2014.

The average lifespan for men last year rose by 0.5 years compared with a year before, while for women by 0.1 years. This rise didn’t modify the general tendency of the rise in life expectancy and didn’t remove the gap existing between sexes.

The women live by eight years on average longer than men. This discrepancy is due to the higher rate of premature mortality among men. The difference between the life expectancy for women and men in 2019 decreased by 0.4 years on a year before.
