An automatic mobile disinfection unit has been installed at the border crossing Giurgiulești, Cahul district. The first unit of its kind in Moldova, it can disinfect any type of vehicle in a very short time.
Contacted by IPN, head of Veterinary Sanitation Oversight Directorate Maxim Sârbu said the system had been installed three days prior and it was functioning at high capacity. It disinfects all vehicles entering Moldova, both from Romania and Ukraine. It is a platform that is mounted by vehicles, including those with heavy weights. The platform has spouts that disperse disinfectant onto the vehicle.
The automatic mobile disinfection unit was installed in response to the poor situation concerning African swine fever outbreaks in neighboring countries and in Moldova. The equipment had been purchased last year, through a grant awarded by the European Union.
Recently, the National Food Safety Agency (ANSA) has lifted the restrictions imposed on the village of Mereni, Anenii Noi, after 60 days of quarantine set up around the outbreak epicenter that was confirmed on June 8. Currently, there still are active epicenters in Giurgiulești, Cahul, Vulcănești and Comrat.
