The authorities intend to reduce the food waste per capita by 30% over ten years and by 50% over 15 years. The objectives for achieving such results will be included in a bill on the diminution of food waste that will be drafted by the Ministry of Economy and Infrastructure, IPN reports.

The Ministry said that by this bill they aim to ensure an optimal legal framework for preventing food waste in Moldova, by encouraging private individuals and legal entities and also public institutions to reduce the quantity of food waste.

The fight against food waste involves measures to mobilize and make more responsible the producers, providers and sellers, consumers and associations working in the agrifood sector so as to maximally use the comestible resources. The authorities aim to use the unsold and unused products that are yet fit for human consumption for donations and other transformation purposes. The products could be turned into food for animals, compost for agriculture or energy.

Those interested in the bill can submit recommendations or proposals to the Ministry of Economy and Infrastructure until March 20.
