The authorities of Moldova should understand that the Administrative Territorial Unit Gagauzia (UTAG) is a potential key to the settlement of the Transnistrian dispute. According to a press release of the Gagauzia Governor, Mihail Furmuzal, this is one of the conclusions of the visit to Comrat of Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Great Britain and Northern Ireland John Bayer. In this context, the collocutors shared the belief that a more judicious behaviour of the central authorities in the relations with Comrat would contribute to diminishing the tensions and regaining the trust between Chisinau and Tiraspol. According to the cited source, the UK Ambassador appreciated the fact that the local elections in the regions met to the democratic standards. Also the parties discussed issues related to the social-economic aspects of region’s life, as well as problems related to the proper representation of the Gagauzia residents in the republican bodies.
