A direct Chisinau-Athens flight will be launched in 2024, as agreed by President Moldova Maia Sandu and Greek Prime Minister Kyriákos Mitsotákis during a meeting in Athens.

President Sandu declared that Moldova is interested in an even closer cooperation with the Hellenic Republic in a number of areas. “During the discussion, we agreed to do our best to open a direct flight between our capitals early next year. I discussed with Prime Minister Mitsotákis about economic cooperation and attracting Greek investment, including in the context of the reconstruction process of the cities in southern Ukraine”, the Moldovan president said.

Maia Sandu welcomed the decision of the Greek authorities to open an embassy in Chisinau and invited the Greek prime minister to visit our country. She also thanked the Greek partners for supporting Moldova’s accession to the EU. According to the Moldovan president, the discussion organized yesterday by the Greek prime minister with the countries of the Western Balkans, Ukraine, and Moldova – states that aspire to become members of the EU – is a positive signal that Moldova has strong friends in the European Union who stand with our country in its European journey.

President Sandu recalled that this spring the state company Energocom signed a cooperation agreement with the Greek operator DEPA and, subsequently, a natural gas deal was concluded, stating that the diversification of natural gas supply sources is key to ensuring Moldova’s energy security.

Maia Sandu visited Athens on Monday and Tuesday to attend a summit of leaders of Western Balkans states, Bulgaria, Croatia, Romania, Ukraine and the of the European Union.
