If an earthquake measuring 7 degrees on the Richter scale occurs in Chisinau, at least 150 persons would die, while another 250 would be hurt. The damage would amount to 15 billion lei. The assessments were made by the Experimental Seismology Center of the Academy of Sciences of Moldova and were presented in the October 9 meeting of the Chisinau Commission for Emergencies, IPN reports.

The Center’s head Ion Ilies considers a warning system should be implemented to inform the people about a possible earthquake approximately 35 seconds before it. “This way there will be avoided situations of panic and gas leakages,” he stated.

Deputy mayor Nistor Grozavu said that 153 apartment buildings in Chisinau do not have emergency exits. However, most of the blocks would resist earthquakes of 7 degrees. The building known as “Romanita” (“Chamomile”) from Botanica district is in the most unfavorable situation. In case of quakes or other emergencies, the evacuation from the block is difficult owing to the unadjusted stairs.

Mayor of Chisinau Dorin Chirtoaca recommended the commission to examine the international experience and analyze the efficiency of the warning systems. The preparedness of the personnel for emergencies is not appropriate and instructive meetings should be staged on the steps that must be taken during earthquakes.

An earthquake measuring 5.7 on the Richter scale happened in the Vrancea Mountains of Romania on the night of October 6. In Chisinau its magnitude was 4-5.
