The European Union is determined to help the Republic of Moldova by outfitting its armed forces with additional equipment given the cybersecurity logistics and other activities aimed at strengthening the military capacities and the possibility of acquiring energy resources through the EU’s platform. Any escalation and provocative statements about the situation in the Republic of Moldova or Transnistria will be avoided. “We want to prevent incidents,” the President of the European Council Charles Michel stated after a meeting with President Maia Sandu.

In her speech, Maia Sandu said the Republic of Moldova needs to continue the budgetary support program so as to revitalize the Moldovan economy, while the citizens want the country to join the European family as swiftly as possible.

Speaking about the immediate tasks of the Moldovan officials, which are also influenced by the Russian invasion of Ukraine, President Sandu said that Moldova banks on the partners’ assistance in helping those who flee form the war. “We also count on the opening of the European market to Moldovan fruit that can no longer be exported to Eastern markets. We also need permits for crossing the EU for our freight carriers,” noted the official, appreciating the openness of some of the EU member state.

For his part, the President of the European Council Charles Michel said the Republic of Moldova will be further supported economically and politically and €15 million will be offered for the migration sector.

As to the expectations concerning the response to Moldova’s application for EU membership, the official reiterated that the European Commission intends to publish its opinion by the end of June. “It is a complex process. We will support Moldova’s efforts to comply with the requirements (...) I’m sure that during the next two months, we will be able to transmit a clear signal as to the EU’s enlargement,” said Charles Michel.

Afterward, the institution will decide when the issue will be brought into discussion by the European leaders. The official noted that in parallel with this process, the EU acts immediately to strengthen the ties with the Republic of Moldova, including in the field of energy security.
