The main objectives of Moldova this year are to maintain political stability, to sign and ratify the Association Agreement with the EU and for the pro-European parties to win the next parliamentary elections, Head of Parliament Igor Corman said in an interview for Radio Free Europe, quoted by IPN.
“On a short-term, an important goal is the signing of the Association Agreement with the EU. We want to ratify it this year. This is a great challenge in this difficult geopolitical context, before the parliamentary elections, when not all the political forces in the country support this thing,” stated the official.
Igor Corman added that after the accord is signed and ratified, it will be implemented and approaches will be made to obtain the status of accession candidate of the EU. “We saw that discussions already started in Moldova about when the country may become an EU member state. I prefer to concentrate on what we can do on a short and medium term,” he said.
Igor Corman also referred to the ideas promoted by different national parties, saying that this is normal in a democratic state, when the legislation is respected. But the politicians and the leaders of all the political parties should realize that in such a difficult pre-electoral context, by their statements they can cause disorder and developments similar to those in Ukraine.
He added that it is important to avoid provocations that can lead to the destabilization of the situation on May 9 as there are political forces that want only Victory Day to be marked on this day, while others speak about May 9 only as about Europe Day. “I think that Victory Day is a symbolic day when World War II ended. May 9 is also the day of peace and unity on the European continent,” stated Igor Corman.
He underlined that in this important and difficult year, the country needs reconciliation, political stability and peace in society more than ever so as to be able to develop the relations both with the EU and with the Eastern partners.
