“The day the Association Agreement was signed – June 27 – is a historical day for Moldova. Despite the problems faced, confident steps were taken towards achieving the common dream – a better future alongside the EU member states,” the leader of the Liberal Party (PL) Mihai Ghimpu says in a congratulatory letter addressed to the people, IPN reports.
According to the Liberal leaders, several generations struggled for this dream to come true. This struggle in 1988-1989 led to the formation of the National Liberation Movement. An important role was played by the young people who took to the streets in April 2009 to protect democracy. Regretfully, many of them went through the ‘death corridor’ created by the Communist government. “Now this great accomplishment was possible owing to the unconditional support provided by the EU, the United States and other states. We thank the authorities and citizens of these states for this support,” said Mihai Ghimpu.
The politician notes that the signing of the Association Agreement is a start that encourages the implementation of reforms for the people’s benefit, the establishment of the rule or law, and the reformation of the state institutions for implementing the European standards in Moldova. “This year more than ever, we must be united and show political maturity in the November 30 elections. The country’s European course must be protected and continued,” stated Mihai Ghimpu.
