The Association Agreement with the European Union comes as strategic support for the European modernization of Moldova, said the leader of the Democratic Party (PDM) Marian Lupu. Within a survey conducted by IPN among lawmakers, the Democratic leader stated that he will vote for the ratification of the Association Agreement, as his colleagues from the coalition will do.

“We see very well the precedence of the internal policy aspects that derive from this accord. As we aim to develop the country, this agreement comes with a series of actions, powerful motivations and important financial resources for this and the future governments to possess the leverage needed to ensure this development, progress and the European modernization of Moldova,” stated Marian Lupu.

He also said that the Deep and Comprehensive Free Trade Agreement, which is of enormous economic importance to Moldova, occupies over 50% of the document’s content. “In general, there was made a lot of effort. We will evidently continue to work together. We are approaching a very important event – the signing and ratification of the accord,” said the Democratic leader.

According to Marian Lupu, the content and form of this accord does not impinge on Moldova’s sovereignty. This agreement does not envision the delegation of a part of the sovereign, decisional rights of Moldova to the European authorities. This will not happened even when Moldova obtains the status of accession candidate. The Constitution may be amended and a part of Moldova’s sovereign rights may be delegated to the European institutions only when Moldova becomes a fully-fledged member of the EU.

Marian Lupu noted that a part of the provisions of the Association Agreement will take effect this October, not necessarily after the accord is ratified by all the EU member states. The other provisions will come into force when the agreement is ratified by all the parties. “We intend to ratify the accord as soon as possible. The speed at which it will be ratified by the parliaments of the EU member states depends on the will of the lawmakers of these countries, but I think that this process won’t last long,” he stated.

Moldova will sign the Association Agreement with the EU on June 27. The accord is to be ratified by Moldova’s Parliament by the end of July.
