On his arrival in Chisinau, President of Romania Traian Basescu said that his visit to Moldova hasn’t been planned, but it shows that sometimes the road of a Romanian head of state from Vilnius to Bucharest goes through Chisinau. He underlined that he came to Chisinau to meet with his Moldovan counterpart Nicolae Timofti and to take part in the official reception held by the Romanian Embassy on the occasion of the National Day of Romania that is marked on December 1, IPN reports.

Traian Basescu thanked the people of Moldova, the Filat Government, the Leanca Government and all the politicians for continuously supporting Moldova’s European course. The road from the initialing of the Association Agreement to the integration into the EU is long and difficult. Romania signed the Association Agreement in 1993, but it became part of the EU 14 years later, in 2007. The process involved fundamental changes. In 1995, Romania’s exports totaled US$7 billion, while this year they came to € 50 billion.

The Romanian head of state expressed his confidence that the Moldovan citizens will be able to travel visa-free to the EU after next March. The free movement of people and goods offered by the Association Agreement will give Moldova a sound development prospect.

At the airport, Traian Basescu was met by the President of Moldova Nicolae Timofti, who said that the valuable support of Romania in implementing the strategic European integration project counts a lot for the Moldovans.

“Romania constantly and firmly pleaded Moldova’s cause, alongside other partners of our country. This way, we were able to make quick progress on the path to European integration. Other important events will follow. I’m confident that our brothers from Romania are near us and I assure you that we will appreciate this support,” said Nicolae Timofti.

He thanked his Romanian counterpart for the invitation to make a visit to Bucharest on December 1, to take part in the celebrations on the National Day of Romania. Nicolae Timofti accepted the invitation.
