The participants in the Afghanistan war who got a disability and the families of those who were killed in battle will benefit from a lump-sum payment of 1,000 lei from the Chisinau Municipal Fund on the occasion of the Day of Remembrance for those Killed in the Afghanistan War that is celebrated on February 15.

Igor Ciobanu, deputy head of the Fund’s General Division, has told IPN that about 120 persons – veterans and families of those killed in war – will benefit from such assistance in the municipality of Chisinau. The money can be collected at the branches of Moldindconbank as of February 15, by presenting the identity card. The persons confined to bed can get the money by proxies.

Contacted by IPN, acting head of the Social-Humanitarian and Interethnic Relations Division Cristina Aparatu said that by tradition the festivities on February 15 start with the laying of flowers at the monument to Ruler Stephan the Great and Holy. Afterward, the participants in the commemoration events will march to the Memorial Complex “Holy Memory to Sons of Homeland” in the Afghan Park in Chisinau. A meeting that will involve officials will be held there. The participants will also enjoy a meal with soldier’s porridge.

Moldova remembers those who died in the Afghanistan war of 1979-1989 every year on February 15. The war involved over 12,000 Moldovan soldiers. Many of those who returned home have disability degrees.
