The Communist parliamentary group will not vote for the ratification of the Association Agreement with the EU, Communist lawmaker Artur Reshetnicov said within an inquiry held by IPN among lawmakers.

“After the meeting with the President of the European Commission Jose Manuel Barroso, President Vladimir Voronin announced that the Communist faction will not vote for the ratification of the Association Agreement and presented the objections to its content, explaining why we do not agree with this accord. The whole Communist parliamentary group will not vote for the ratification,” said Artur Reshetnicov.

He also said that only the national interest would make him vote for the ratification of the Association Agreement. “Any accord is negotiated and signed in the interests of both of the sides. Regretfully, this accord was negotiated and formulated without taking into account the political and economic interests of the Moldovan people. In such a situation, with such content, the Communists will no way vote for its ratification,” stated the lawmaker.

In a communiqué, the Communist Party (PCRM) says many of the provisions of the Association Agreement are definitely inacceptable. The merging into one document of the political and economic sectors makes its implementation with the two sectors being independent from each other impossible. The political part of the accord, which obliges Moldova to act in compliance with the EU policies in such areas as security and defense, runs counter to Moldova’s Constitution, which provides that the country is neutral.

The PCRM says the mechanisms for defending the interests of one of the sides on the territory of the other side do not take into consideration Moldova’s sovereign rights, while the management of the process of implementing the accord does not imply the participation of Moldova’s Parliament. The accord’s part referring to the creation of the Deep and Compressive Free Trade Area offers unilateral benefits to the EU member states and poses threats to the Moldovan economy.
