The leader of the parliamentary group of the Democratic Party Marian Lupu said Article 13 of the Constitution should remain unchanged because the constitutional package, following the judgment passed by the Constitutional Court, contains the phrase “Romanian language” and the European approach “Unity through diversity” can be thus ensured. According to the Democratic MP, the non-modification of Article 13 would mean ensuring of respect for any citizen of the country and their right to ethnical, cultural and linguistic self-determination.

“Beyond the fact that it is a strictly European approach, it is also a very important condition for keeping the state identity of the Republic of Moldova. Those who vehemently promote the elimination of the phrase “Moldovan language” from Article 13 do not stop at the language. Let’s look around to see the reality. They do not promote the concept “one language, two nations, two countries”, but another concept - “one language, one nation, one country”. I have always been for the statehood and sovereignty of the Republic of Moldova, as the overwhelming majority of the colleagues from the Democratic Party were, and this is the official position of the party. Respectively, with such an idea we will continue to defend and promote the values of sovereignty and independence of the Republic of Moldova as a state,” Marian Lupu said in an interview for Radio Free Europe, which is quoted by IPN.

Asked about the war between the pro-union and anti-union statements signed by councilors of a number of mayor’s offices, Marian Lupu said this is an invented struggle. This is not the real agenda for the country’s people and is nothing else but the start of the election campaign. “Those who come up with the idea of unionism and the Socialists too pursue the goal of making the people in the Republic of Moldova believe that this is the real problem that determines the real agenda of our country. This is definitely not true. But such a tactic is very important for the Socialists and also for the unionists,” added the politician.

The MP also referred to the enshrining of the European course in the Constitution and to particular conditions imposed by the Liberal Party (PL) and the Liberal Democratic Party (PLDM), namely to amend the constitutional provisions concerning the official language and to leave the Commonwealth of Independent States. “It is a very important subject for the Republic of Moldova. I refer to the European perspective and the enshrining of this strategic direction in the country’s Constitution. It is so important that there is no place for blackmailing and conditionality here. This is my view and the view of the Democratic parliamentary group. One cannot play with conditions when it is about a decision that is crucial for the country’s present and future,” he stated.

Marian Lupu also said that the vote to stipulate the foreign course in the Constitution will be an exercise of big responsibility for all the pro-European parties, including the PL and PLDM. It will be then very clear what the most important thing for each pro-European party is and to what extent they are really pro-European.
