The arrest is applied excessively and not always justifiably. This is a precondition for the large number of convictions at the European Court of Human Rights, Prime Minister Pavel Filip stated in the opening of the June 5 meeting of the Cabinet, when he raised the issue, IPN reports.

According to the Premier, there are also other measures that could substitute preventive detention, such as judiciary control or house arrest. Pavel Filip expressed his concern about the large number of hearings held behind closed doors.

“This absence of transparency discredits the reforms implemented in the justice sector,” he stated. Premier Filip reminded that the attraction of foreign investment for developing the national economy and Moldova’s reputation globally depend first of all on the quality of justice, which is the citizens’ right to a transparent and fair trial.
