Areas of cherry orchards extended

Cherry orchards represent 5.51% of all the fruit orchards. The areas of cherry orchards increased significantly during the last few years. In 2015 alone, cherry trees were planted on an area of 507 hectares, IPN reports.

According to the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Industry, the cherry production sector is a very promising one. The average harvest in 2013 – 2015 was of 3,240 tonnes, while exports exceeded 1,200 tonnes.

The National Bureau of Statistics said the areas of fruit orchards (seed fruit trees, walnut trees, berry bushes and strawberries) totaled 135,500 hectares in 2015, 110,360 of which yielded fruit. Cherry orchards occupy an area of 4,070 ha, 3,120 ha of which yield fruit.
