The rehabilitation works carried out in the municipality of Chisinau are welcome, but these works not always take into account the needs of the persons with disabilities. These persons, when they go out, encounter a lot of problems, starting from the inaccessible public transport stations and ending with inaccessible institutions.
In a news conference at IPN, Ludmila Iachim, executive director of the Association “Motivație”, underlined the importance of accessibility for the persons with disabilities and for other persons. Ludmila Iachim uses a wheelchair and says that she feels a person with disabilities when going out. “I meet with a lot of problems, architectural provocations, such as inaccessible stations, public transport, pedestrian crossings. I want to draw attention that accessibility for the persons with disabilities does not mean only an entrance ramp. The message is understood incorrectly,” stated Ludmila Iachim.
“Accessibility is not a caprice, but a necessity for me. The going-outs are a daily challenge,” noted Ludmila Iachim. She called on the authorities to take attitude, to act more professionally and to use the support of civil society organizations. The money should be used correctly and the standards and necessities for all the groups of persons should be taken into account from the start.
Vitalie Meşter, executive director of the Center for the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, noted that the member organizations of the civic platform “Chisinau Accessible to Everyone”, are designing a plan of action that they want to be successfully implemented by the Chisinau City Hall. “Accessibility does not refer strictly to the persons with disabilities. It refers to all the residents and visitors of the city,” he stated.
The civic platform “Chisinau Accessible to Everyone” is a civil society initiative. In 2018, for the first time, a plan of action was worked out for the municipality of Chisinau and a cooperation agreement between the platform and the local administration was signed to make the city accessible to all those who live here and who visit it.
