April 7 marked by protests in Chisinau

A series of events to commemorate the victims of the April 7, 2009 rioting and protests to show the dissatisfaction with the law enforcement bodies’ delay in shedding light on the criminal cases started over use of torture on April 7 were held in Chisinau four years after those events, IPN reports.

A number of activists of Hyde Park Association and of the Human Rights Information Center protested in front of a number of state institutions, demanding that those who beat and ill-treated young people in April 2009 be held accountable. The protesters reminded that the term during which those to blame for the illegalities committed in April 2009 expires this April. The protests started in front of the General Police Inspectorate, where the protesters put a board with the words “Persons who used torture in April 2009 continue to work here”. Shortly after the activists left, the board was removed. A similar board was put on the building of the Prosecutor General’s Office. Afterward, the protesters went to the Great National Assembly Square.

The youth organization of the Democratic Action Party staged an event in memory of the victims of the April 7 repression. About 30 young people marched with black and white ribbons, which symbolized hope and grief. They lit candles at the Triumphal Arch in central Chisinau, in the place where Valeriu Boboc was killed. The young people also laid flowers at the Monument to Stephan the Great and shared tricolor ribbons to passersby, with the message “We are responsible for our future”.

Acting Minister of the Interior Dorin cean addressed a message to the Moldovans, apologizing for the behavior of the police four years ago, saying the police officers fulfilled political orders.

The same day, Mayor of Chisinau Dorin Chirtoaca laid flowers at the grave of Valeriu Boboc in Bubuiec village. The commemoration activities ended with a remembrance meeting with lit candles in the Great National Assembly Square. It involved victims of the April 7, 2009 events. The participants lit several hundred candles and lampions.
