Parliament on April 5 decided that April 7 will be celebrated as the Freedom Day, when there will be commemorated the young people who protested peacefully for freedom and democracy in April 2009. The draft decision was put forward by the Liberal parliamentary group, Info-Prim Neo reports.
Author of the initiative Corina Fusu said the April 7, 2009 events deeply marked Moldova’s history. “On this day, the young people with democratic views, supported by other social sections, clearly stated that the people have the right to return to a democratic and free development path. The intimidation, oppression and repression acts by the then authorities resulted in numerous cases of torture, including cases of death,” she said.
The initiative wasn’t supported by the group of Socialists. Their leader Igor Dodon said it is three years of the tragic events, but many questions remained without answer. “I want to remind that we do not yet know who is to blame for the April events. It’s not right to adopt decisions until we do not clarify things,” he stated.
Liberal MP Gheorghe Brega replied that Igor Dodon backs only the actions of those who exported and killed people. “I see that you defend the interests of those who destroyed their own country and the church and shot thousands of intellectuals in November 1917. But you should safeguard the national interests or you will be alive among the dead,” he said.
Thousands of young people took part in the protests against the election results staged on April 7, 2009. Hundreds of them were maltreated, beaten and humiliated in police commissariats. The authorities have not yet announced who is to blame for the devastation of public buildings and the maltreatment in police stations.
