The Chisinau Appeals Court upheld the decision of the Buiucani Court whereby ex-Premier Vlad Filat was sentenced to nine years in jail. The lawyers said they will appeal the decision to the Supreme Court of Justice, IPN reports.
After the November 11 hearing, lawyer Igor Popa said the judges accepted the defense’s appeal as regards special confiscation of property and will pass a judgment on this on December 9. “We consider that the judges of the Appeals Court didn’t fully perceive the essence of these materials. We think this sentence is illegal,” he stated.
The lawyer also said that the judges passed an interlocutory judgment by which the chief of Penitentiary No. 13 was punished for violating Vlad Filat’s rights. “The penitentiary chief was fined 500 lei for repeatedly violating Filat’s right to telephone conversations, visits by relatives and meetings with lawyers,” said Igor Popa.
According to the lawyer, Vlad Filat also spoke in the hearing. He expressed his concerns about how justice is done in Moldova and said that his case is political and was fabricated. “Vlad Filat does not accept blame and said that all the evidence was fabricated so as to blame him for all the scams employed in the Moldovan financial system,” stated Igor Popa.
He added he will fully publish the file of the ex-Premier, which will become an object of study for international institutions and law students.
