The Chisinau City Appeals Court overrode as unfounded the Anticorruption Prosecutor’s Office’s appeal against the judge of inquiry’s decision by which five of the six requests to sequestrate property of Vladimir Plahotniuc were rejected, IPN reports.
Two weeks ago, the Ciocana branch of the Chisinau City Court accepted only one of the six requests made by prosecutors. It was then ordered to sequestrate six apartments and four nonresidential facilities in Moldova, estimated at about 33 million lei.
The other five requests, to sequestrate villas in Switzerland, France, and Romania, five cars and a boat, registered in Switzerland and also four cars, registered in Moldova, were rejected.
In a press release, the Prosecutor General’s Office said the prosecutors provided enough evidence, substantiated by the Assets Recovery Agency, which shows that the accused is the effective beneficiary of those assets even if they are all registered in the names of other persons.
According to prosecutors, the movable and immovable property was obtained with money stolen from the national banking system. To compensate for the caused damage, the national and foreign assets of the accused should be sequestrated.
Vladimir Plahotniuc was put on the wanted list after the prosecutors accused him of creating and managing a criminal organization and of serious swindle and money laundering.
