“Apa-Canal Chisinau” is monitoring the quality of water under its supervision. The company’s specialists disinfect 3-5 wells every day. The works are part of the campaign of disinfection and monitoring of wells in Chisinau, started at the beginning of June. So far, more than 25 wells have been disinfected, Info-Prim Neo reports. According to a press release of the water utility, the action takes place every year and is meant to prevent and destroy harmful microorganisms in alternative water sources. According to an ordinance of the City Hall, the water utility is obliged to inspect all 59 wells in its management until the end of the month, when the results will be announced by the Preventive Medicine Center. Until then, the doctors recommend the people to drink tap water in order to avoid unwanted consequences. Before the cleaning process, samples of water are taken form each well. Only afterwards, the water is evacuated and drained to the sewage system with the help of an electric pump. Later, the water sources are disinfected with chlorine. “First the water is cleaned and disinfected because the disinfection in a dirty well is totally inefficient. We have been doing this for years and the lab samples prove that the disinfection kills harmful microorganisms”, said Arcadie Rusnac, head of the division for quality control and regulation. After the disinfection, water samples are repeatedly taken from the well to decide whether it is drinkable. The wells which fail the test will be closed and a warning sign will be placed near them. The water in these wells will be considered only for technical use and not for drinking. The quality of water in wells and natural springs varies because a series of external factors, such as heavy rainfalls and the melting of snows, the installation of WCs in their vicinity, the liquid fraction of livestock waste, which can seriously harm the quality of the water. In order to prevent the mass outbreak of acute diarrheic diseases and other non-infectious diseases it is recommended that the water is boiled before drinking. Yearly, “Apa-Canal Chisinau” allots over 600,000 lei for the disinfection and maintenance of the 59 wells under its supervision.
