Currently, the level of water in the Nistru River is critical, but stable and has been so for two weeks already, technical director of SA “Apa-Canal Chisinau” Vitalie Midari stated for IPN. He said that now the water in the Nistru measures 8.5 meters and if the level decreases below 8.4 meters, the pumping station on the Nistru that supplies water to Chisinau could stop work.

According to Vitalie Midari, the Ministry of Environment and the local public administration were informed about this worrisome situation and were asked to intervene.

The public utility’s technical director noted that they are now considering the possibility of intervening in the riverbed of the Nistru, if need be. Such a possibility is discussed with representatives of design institutions so as to increase the level of water.

Emphasis is placed on the rehabilitation of the existing artesian wells and on the construction of new such wells. This would be an alternative source of water supply, as it is provided in the Priority Investments Program that is financed by the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development and the European Investment Bank.

Recently, Minister of Environment Valeriu Munteanu said there are no reasons for concern about the announced hydrological drought.
