Antitorture prosecutors in local prosecutor’s offices

All the local and specialized prosecutor’s offices of the country will have by a prosecutor responsible for the investigation of cases of torture, degrading and inhuman treatment. They will examine the complaints and legal cases over torture, misuse of power accompanied by use of violence, compulsion to make statements, Info-Prim Neo reports, quoting a communiqué from the Prosecutor General’s Office (PG). A torture combating division that will coordinate the related activities at national level was created at the Prosecutor General’s Office following the reorganization of the institution. According to the communiqué, Prosecutor General Valeriu Zubco said the PG began to deal with torture long ago, but the necessity of creating a division for investigating cases of inhuman and degrading treatment became more evident after the April 7, 2009 events. The torture combating division will monitor the related activities carried out by the local prosecutor’s offices and will investigate certain cases of torture.
