The 728 coins and two sculptures confiscated at the Cahul-Oancea customs post represent authentic historical treasure. They are antique and are very expensive and were thus transmitted to the National Museum of History, IPN reports.

In a communiqué, the Customs Service says that the doctors of history and scientific researchers of the National Museum of History discovered that the coins meet the characteristics from numismatic catalogues. A part of the coins were issued by Hellenistic states, while others form part of medieval issues dating from the Roman Empire. They were valued at hundreds of thousands of lei.

As to the sculptures, they date back to 2800-2400 BC. Such sculptures are very rare and can be met among the historical monuments of Antique Mesopotamia. One of the sculptures represents Roman Emperor Octavianus Augustus. Such pieces are sold only at auctions for about €100,000.

Four Moldovans are investigated in this case, two of them under arrest.

Under the legislation, the treasure can become Moldova’s property if no state claims it and confirms that it belongs to it.
