An anticorruption prosecutor, who was suspended from office, is tried for illicit enrichment. He declared incomes of 4.9 million lei, while prosecutors identified expenses of over 6.5 million lei, IPN reports.

According to prosecutors, the suspect, who worked for a period at the Prosecutor General's Office, then at the Anticorruption Prosecutor's Office, accumulated goods and money to the value of over 4.9 million lei. The suspended prosecutor claims that his incomes consist of salaries, allowances, proceeds from the sale of the apartment and two cars, as well as almost 250,000 lei from donations at family events.

The prosecutors found, however, that although the person took out bank loans, his expenses exceeded 6.5 million lei, and that he owned, through relatives and other persons, apartments in Chisinau and a car.

Under the Criminal Code, the illicit enrichment of a person holding public office is punishable by a fine of 400,000 to 500,000 lei or by imprisonment of 7 to 15 years, with ban on holding particular positions or exercising a certain activity for a period of 10 to 15 years.
