The Anticorruption Prosecutor’s Office does not form part of the process of examining the request to set someone free before time. The law does not envision this and does not enable the prosecutors to challenge the decision, Anticorruption Prosecutor Viorel Morari stated for IPN when he was asked to comment on the release of former Prime Minister Vlad Filat on December 3.

“The Prosecutor’s Office didn’t take part in the examination of the request to set him free before time. The procedure is defined by the Penal Procedure Code. We didn’t become involved. I didn’t see the court ruling and cannot comment,” said the chief of the Anticorruption Prosecutor’s Office that managed the case.

Vlad Filat was arrested in October 2015. On June 27, 2016, he was sentenced to nine years behind bars for passive corruption and influence peddling and was held at Penitentiary No. 13 in Chisinau.

Vlad Filat was contacted by IPN on the phone number used while serving as Premier, but he didn’t answer the phone. For the paper Ziarul de Gardă, Vladimir Filat said he was released from jail and was going to visit his parents whom he didn’t see for a long period of time. He also said that at least today he will not take part in radio or TV programs and will not make relevant comments.
