Antibiotics for treating animals will be released only based on veterinary prescriptions. Cattle farms will purchase medicinal products for veterinary use with antimicrobial effect only based on the order signed by a veterinarian who is employed or contracted for proving veterinary assistance services. The observance of the imposed restrictions will be controlled by the National Food Safety Agency.

Contacted by IPN for details, Victor Pîslaru, head of the Agency’s Veterinary Drugs and Fodder Control Division, said that when the antibiotics are used in an uncontrolled way, risks of antimicrobial resistance appear and these medicines are of no use to animals and to humans too.

The National Food Safety Agency’s order that restricts the use of antimicrobial substances for animals for combating antimicrobial resistance took effect on September 13.
