The ex-lawyer of the municipal radio station “Antena C” and one of the supporters of the station’s opposition movement, Valeriu Munteanu, was elected mayor in his native town of Floreni, Anenii-Noi, defeating in the first round the candidates of the Communist Party and the Christian-Democrat People’s Party.
Munteanu told Info-Prim Neo that he polled 60%, out of a total of 1,500 votes, although one of his rivals was the director of a bird farm with almost 350 employees, and the other one was a large landowner.
He ran independently, but he had the support of the candidates for town councillor representing the Moldova Noastra Alliance and the Social Democracy Party, which will represent the majority in the town council.
Munteanu said he ran for mayor because he is very attached to Floreni and its residents. He felt obliged, after the departure of the ex-mayor, to protect his native town so that it doesn’t get in the wrong hands.
In the next 4 years, Munteanu plans, among others, to set up an authorised wasteyard, to build a town museum, to twin Floreni with a Romanian town, to erect a monument to one of the ancestors, and to arrange for a monograph about Floreni to be written.
The “Antena C” radio was privatised at the beginning of this year through a decision of the communist and PPCD municipal councillors. After winning the mayoral race, Munteanu feels he has partially taken revenge for what happened to the public radio station.
