A nominating committee has selected another three candidates for the office of Judge of the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) in respect of Moldova that will be presented to the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe for consideration. According to the organisation “Lawyers for Human Rights”, the three candidates are: the vice-president of the Supreme Court of Justice, Judge Mihail Poalelungi (13 votes), Deputy Speaker of Parliament Maria Postoico (12 votes), and Constitutional Judge Veaceslav Zaporojan (11 votes). 19 Moldovan citizens applied for ECHR judgeship. A similar nominating committee, established at the beginning of the year, nominated Victoria Iftodi, Moldovan Ambassador to France, Victor Orandas, Judge at the Chisinau Economic Court, and Lilia Vasilevici, Judge at the Chisinau Centru District Court. However, on September 17, the ECHR Subcommittee for the Election of Judges rejected the list of candidates proposed by Moldova. ECHR judges are elected for a term of six years by the Parliamentary Assembly with a majority vote. Judges are assumed to be impartial arbiters, rather than representatives of any country.
